What happens if I don't take care of my lawn or cut my grass? Lawn maintenance is the most used lawn care service according to Lawn & Landscape. Many lawns have grass with germination times in as little as 1 week or as lengthy as 1 month or more. Depending on how much of your free time is available, lawn care and maintenance may be outside of your reach, especially since Central and Southern New Jersey residents are spending 1.5 hours a week on lawn mowing alone. Inconsistency in mowing can also give way for weeds to grow and further choke the growth of healthy grass. If you’ve ever noticed patchy, dry spots on your lawn, it’s probably because of the infrequency in trimming and watering.
How short should I cut my lawn? If grass grows too high, it will not only raise neighboring suspicions and concerns (grrr those pesky neighbors). It can also block out the sun from the ground, further damaging yard health. However cutting too much of the grass blade can be detrimental to the health of your lawn. Most grass types should only have 1/3 of the blade taken off during each cut. Cutting too much of the blade off at one time can seriously damage a lawn (not to mention, make a huge mess). Knowing your lawn type is paramount in coming up with a maintenance solution that will be drought-tolerant and look its best. Legal Landscaping employees are your local lawn gurus, educated on all lawn and grass types.
How much does a landscape design and installation cost? Landscaping costs can vary from several hundreds of dollars to several thousands of dollars. This really all depends on the amount of materials needed and time it will take to complete the project. You will always be given a no-obligation, free consultation to discuss your design desires along with a walk-through of your property to prepare for an initial proposal. Your landscape designer will provide you with visuals to aid in the process. After a design is chosen, and the installation takes place, Legal Landscaping can continue to offer advice and care for your landscaped property.
OFFERS THE FOLLOWING LAWN CARE TIPS:
■ Keep up with cutting the grass and watering the grass to save money on reseeding and starting over in the fall.
■ Grass needs to be cut and watered on a regular basis (times vary constantly depending on the weather).
■ If lawns are not cut weekly, the grass can grow thin. The lushest of lawns are maintained on a weekly basis. Lush lawns make weed growth almost impossible.
■ Compacted soil doesn’t allow plants and grass to grow well, although weeds thrive in compacted soil. Avoid mowing in the same pattern to prevent your soil clumping up.
■ Repair broken lawn mowers and keep your lawn mower blades sharp. DO NOT mow over stones, objects, or thick branches. You will ruin the blades, leading to incorrectly cut grass.
■ Avoid scalping the lawn (cutting it to short) by adjusting the height on your lawn mower. You should let grass grow taller in the summer and lower in the winter by adjusting the mower deck.
■ We can recommend and install a sprinkler/irrigation system (We now offer WIFI controllers) if you are too busy to water your lawn. Time-monitored watering decreases the likelihood of grass and plant death.
■ Beware of overwatering your grass! Too much is always too much and this is especially true in lawn care. An overwatered lawn is worse than an underwatered lawn because the risk of lawn infection and fungus increases when the lawn is drowning. Timing is everything!
■ Mow grass when it’s dry. Wet grass or soggy soil can clog your mower or clump on the ground, causing an uneven cut and less-than-perfect final look.
■ Use grass clippings for fertilizer, called “grasscycling.” This method allows you to let the clippings remain on the ground, accounting for ¼ of fertilizing treatment. Be sure to have a mulching mower or mulching blades so that clippings are cut finely and decompose swiftly.
■ Avoid having to rake and bag excess compost by frequently mowing and grasscycling. Too much compost will not work efficiently and will have to be re-mowed.
■ Edge your lawn near walkways, driveways, and plants by setting up a trim pattern. You can use various tools or even bricks and stones to create lines of demarcation.
■ Differing types of soil will require different watering schedules and depths.
■ Watering regimes also change with the seasons, with the hottest temperature months needing the most precise care. Consider growing grass that tolerates heat and drought.
■ Watering during the morning protects your plants and lawn against lawn disease due to excess moisture (generally evaporated by morning sun).
■ Mow grass when the sun is hiding. Cutting grass in extreme heat from the sun causes excess stress and damages grass health. This is also why shaded grassy areas yield taller, thicker grass blades.
■ It is well known that fertilizing the soil increases the speed of growth and the richness of yield but overfertilizing can do the opposite: dehydrating and killing the property.
■ When landscaping, try and group plants, shrubs, and flowers that have the same maintenance requirements. This will reduce the amount of time you spend watering, seeding, fertilizing, etc.
■ Consult with one of our landscaping professionals for additional help in choosing the right plants based on texture, color, smell, health benefits, etc.
■ Don’t forget hardscaping elements! Hardscaping is any element of the landscape that does not include plants (bricks, pavers, lawn chairs, lighting, fountains, ponds, stone, and so forth).
■ You can prepare your lawn for a great spring yield in the fall or early winter by fertilizing the grounds before the first freeze. Don’t worry about removing snow or snow plowing the grass; snow protects and insulates grass during harsh winters. Where sidewalks and grass meet, use grass-friendly deicers to further protect your lawn.
■ For snow plowing lots, driveways, and other expanses, plow gradually during snowfall instead of allowing snow to pile up, making snow removal much more laborious.
■ Your lawn will benefit from a seasonal maintenance contract so that our specialists can nurse your lawn through the 4 seasons. Call us today for a low-cost plan!
